My Sugar Peony

Thursday, June 16, 2011

I love peonies! I have fond memories of this flower, they remind me of my mother and my grandmother. Both of these women grew beautiful peonies in their yards and around their homes. I wanted to continue this tradition, so I planted a few of my own peony bushes. Right now my peonies are in full bloom and are covered with full gorgeous blossoms. Soooo beautiful!!!

This was a small 6" practice cake. (Lemon cake with lemon Swiss Meringue Buttercream.) I made the sugar peony by combining my regular peony cutters with a couple of cutters from other flowers. This peony covers the entire top of the cake, so you can see just how large it was!!! Making a peony this large is very time consuming, but I simply love the end result.

I have to confess, however, that I used some extra hydrangea leaves I had lying around instead of making peony leaves. I simply ran out of time... oops! Luckily this cake was just for practice, so if you don't mind... I don't mind.

  3. Glad to hear all of you love peonies too!

@Joni- The peony is made from gumpaste (or sugarpaste). Fondant is not stretchy or strong enough to roll this thin. Plus fondant won't hold together when you thin the edges of the petals with a ball tool. HTH

  5. Thanks Maxine, My kids don't understand how I can stand to work on "one" flower for so long. It can be a little tedious... but I still love doing it! :)

  6. I love that peonies remind you of your mom and grandma because they remind me of Grandma Olive. As soon as we have a yard, I plan on starting a grandma garden, and peonies are on the top of my list. Your cake is beautiful.

  7. Thanks Keri! It's funny how flowers can bring such great memories. Irises also remind my of my mom... she had entire flower bed filled with lovely purple irises. One of these days I'll have to try making a sugar paste iris.

  9. Just happened to find your blog site. Stunning peony. If you dont mind me asking Judy how did you attach the gumpaste peony to the Meringue buttercream cake top?

  10. Unrefined polish... sorry it took so long to get back to you!
I use a straw and push it down into the cake. Just stick the wires from the flower into the straw and it will hold the flower in place. The straw also adds stability and keeps the wires from coming in direct contact with the cake.
